At a time when the Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to dominate headlines for its on-field spectacle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has turned its attention to something equally critical, discipline and decorum .

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Saturday made it clear that maintaining the league’s image is non-negotiable , warning that stricter measures are on the table for teams and individuals who breach established norms. His remarks come in the wake of recent disciplinary actions involving members of the Rajasthan Royals camp.

Captain Riyan Parag was fined Rs 25 lakh after being caught on camera vaping , while team manager Romi Bhinder faced a Rs 1 lakh penalty for a protocol breach by using a mobile phone in the dug-out. The incidents have prompted the board to reassess its regulatory framework .

Saikia stressed that accountability extends beyond individuals to entire teams. “It is not only about a player or an official. Teams as a unit must uphold a certain standard so that the reputation of the IPL remains intact ,” he said, indicating that the board is exploring additional provisions to “rein in” violations more effectively.

The IPL governing body has already hinted at initiating more stringent proceedings against erring parties, underlining its intent to safeguard the league’s credibility . Despite the vaping incident drawing attention due to the nationwide ban , Saikia confirmed that no approach from law enforcement has been made so far.

Beyond disciplinary concerns, the BCCI is also moving ahead with key decisions. IPL 2026 playoff venues are expected to be announced shortly, with discussions in their final stages.

On the cricketing front, Saikia struck a balanced note regarding the Impact Player rule . While the format has produced both high-scoring thrillers and low-scoring contests , he emphasized that any review will happen only after the season . “Mid-tournament changes are not an option,” he clarified, adding that no formal requests for revision have been received from franchises so far.

As the IPL grows in scale and influence, the message from the top is clear: entertainment may define the league, but discipline will sustain it.
