IPL Needs Clearer Overseas Player Commitments: Punjab Kings Co-owner Mohit Burman

The debate over overseas player availability in the IPL has resurfaced, with Punjab Kings co-owner Mohit Burman calling for better coordination between the BCCI, foreign boards and franchises to ensure smoother planning for the tournament.

Burman described the issue as “sensitive” and “complex,” noting that franchises often struggle when key international players miss large portions of the season despite being major auction investments.

The concern has been highlighted this season after several Australian stars were unavailable at different stages. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc joined only in the latter half of the tournament after clearance from Cricket Australia, by which time Delhi Capitals had already seen their campaign drift away from contention.

Similarly, Australia captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood were not available from the start due to injury concerns and workload management , further impacting team balance across franchises.

Burman said that while the international cricket calendar is extremely crowded , and players remain committed to their national boards, there must be greater clarity before auctions and commitments are made .

He pointed out that franchises invest heavily in overseas players, and their unavailability disrupts planning, combinations and long-term strategy , while also disappointing fans who expect to see marquee stars throughout the season.

Burman stressed that the solution cannot come through confrontation, but through collaboration between the BCCI, international boards, franchises and players to better align schedules and expectations.

The issue was also raised earlier by Hemang Badani, who expressed frustration over the delayed availability of key overseas players, saying franchises are often left with little control when boards decide otherwise.

The BCCI currently enforces a two-year ban on foreign players who withdraw after being picked in the auction , except in injury cases. However, recurring availability issues continue to pose a challenge for the IPL’s planning and competitiveness.

As the IPL grows further as a global tournament, the need for clearer agreements and better scheduling harmony between international cricket and franchise leagues is becoming increasingly important.
