IPL Cricketer Abhishek Porel Arrested Over Rape Allegation, Sent to 3-Day Police Custody

Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, who has represented Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, has been arrested in connection with a rape case filed by a medical student in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. A court in Chinsurah on Tuesday denied him bail and sent him to three days of police custody.

Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh said Porel was arrested late Monday night after a court order directing his arrest. He was produced before the court on Tuesday.

The cricketer was arrested by Mogra police from his residence in Dum Dum, in North 24 Parganas district.

The case follows a complaint filed by a young medical student at Mogra police station on June 23. According to her complaint, she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three-and-a-half years and had planned to get married. She alleged that Porel had sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage.

The woman also alleged that the two had travelled abroad together but that Porel later denied their relationship, prompting her to approach the police.

The complaint further stated that the couple had a dispute around a year and a half ago, which escalated to the police station, although no formal complaint was filed at that time.

After the June complaint, police began investigating the matter and visited Porel’s residence in Chandannagar several times but were unable to locate him.

The woman subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court, which on July 20 directed police to arrest Porel. The court also ordered the seizure of his electronic devices to prevent the dissemination of photographs of the complainant.

Police have registered a case against Porel under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The proceedings also involve allegations of criminal intimidation and other offences.

Porel had previously denied the allegations. Reactions from the cricketer and his family following his arrest were awaited.

Similarly, Yash Dayal, another IPL cricketer, faced rape allegations in 2025. A woman in Ghaziabad alleged that he had sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage after they had been in a relationship for several years. A separate case was later registered against him in Jaipur under the POCSO Act following allegations by another complainant. Dayal has denied the allegations and has not been convicted in either case.

The allegations remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings, and Porel has not been convicted of any offence.
