IPL Auction Returns to India After Three Straight Overseas Editions

The IPL 2027 player auction will be held in India, bringing the event back to home soil after three consecutive overseas editions. The decision was taken at the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15, according to reports.

The 2027 auction will be a mini-auction, following the mega auction held ahead of the 2025 season. It will allow the 10 franchises to fill vacant slots, address squad gaps and make targeted additions ahead of the 2027 campaign.

The return to India marks a change after the auction was moved overseas in recent years. Dubai hosted the 2024 auction, followed by the 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while the 2026 mini-auction was staged at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2025. The last IPL auction held in India was in Kochi in 2023.

The decision is understood to have been influenced by the logistical challenges associated with staging a relatively smaller mini-auction overseas. Taking the event back to India could reduce travel and accommodation requirements for franchise owners, officials, scouts and support staff. Reports also indicate that venue selection will have to take into account the availability of hotel rooms, particularly during the busy wedding season towards the end of the year.

However, the exact date and venue have not been announced. December is widely expected to be the auction window, although reports differ on the precise timing.

The Governing Council also discussed the Impact Player rule during its September 15 meeting. A final decision on whether the rule will continue into IPL 2027 has reportedly been deferred to a follow-up meeting next month.

Interestingly, the return to India may not signal a permanent end to overseas auctions. Reports indicate that the possibility of staging a future mega auction outside India remains under consideration.
