Inspiring India: 78-Year-Old Woman Tops M.A. , Wins University Gold
In a heartening story of determination and lifelong learning, Sushma Pradeep Moghe , 78, has secured the first rank and gold medal in the M.A. Marathi programme at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya , proving that age is no barrier to academic excellence. She was honoured at the university’s convocation ceremony on Tuesday, where Mangubhai Patel , Governor of Madhya Pradesh , presented her with the medal for topping the merit list.
Moghe enrolled in the postgraduate course after retirement , saying she had not initially realised she could pursue higher education at this stage of life. On learning about the opportunity to formally study Marathi, she decided to seize it. What began as an effort to meaningfully use her time gradually evolved into a focused academic journey driven by discipline and passion for her mother tongue.
She credited her teachers for their consistent support, guiding her through both online and offline classes and helping her stay confident throughout the programme. Returning to academics filled the void retirement had created and gave her renewed purpose and intellectual engagement.
Deeply attached to Marathi, Moghe has continued her literary pursuits even after completing the degree. She is now translating works of Hindi authors into Marathi, remaining actively engaged in literature. Her message to others is clear: never stop learning and make the best use of time, as opportunities for knowledge are limitless.
