Inside Mission MITRA: ISRO’s new experiment to protect India’s future astronauts
India’s space programme has taken another step toward human spaceflight with the launch of Mission MITRA , a unique behavioural study aimed at improving crew safety and performance for missions such as Gaganyaan .
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has begun this first-of-its-kind experiment in Leh, Ladakh , where scientists are studying how teams function under extreme environmental and operational stress .
The mission, inaugurated by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan , is being conducted from April 2 to April 9 . It focuses on understanding how astronauts and ground control teams operate together in high-pressure conditions and how their decision-making and coordination affect mission success.
Mission MITRA has been jointly designed by ISRO and the Indian Air Force’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine . The study examines the physiological, psychological, and operational dynamics of teams working in challenging environments.
According to ISRO, crew safety and performance are the most critical elements of any human spaceflight mission . Beyond technology and engineering, success in space also depends on the crew’s ability to communicate effectively, manage stress, and maintain psychological resilience during demanding situations.
To understand these factors, scientists conduct analogue missions on Earth. These experiments simulate conditions similar to those faced during space missions and help researchers observe how teams perform under pressure.
Leh has been selected for Mission MITRA because its high-altitude environment, around 3,500 metres above sea level, creates natural challenges such as low oxygen levels, cold temperatures, and isolation . These conditions make it an ideal location to study how crews respond to physical and mental stress.
The findings from this mission are expected to provide valuable insights into team coordination, decision-making under stress, and overall mission preparedness . Such knowledge will be important as India moves closer to launching its first human spaceflight mission under the Gaganyaan programme .
With initiatives like Mission MITRA, ISRO is not only advancing space technology but also focusing on the human element of space exploration, ensuring that future astronauts are prepared to handle the complex challenges of space travel.
