The Indian Navy’s specialised diving support vessel INS Nireekshak reached Colombo on April 21, marking the start of the fourth edition of the India–Sri Lanka Diving Exercise (DIVEX 2026). Scheduled to run until April 27, the exercise brings together teams from the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy for intensive underwater training, joint operations, and exchange of expertise.

Designed to enhance interoperability, coordination, and safety , the exercise focuses on complex diving operations, including submarine rescue scenarios. Such engagements are critical for improving preparedness in handling maritime emergencies, underwater accidents, and disaster response in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region.

INS Nireekshak, built by Mazagon Dock Limited , is a key asset in India’s naval capabilities. Equipped with advanced deep-sea diving systems, recompression chambers, and submarine rescue infrastructure, the vessel can deploy Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles and support saturation diving missions. Its sophisticated systems allow it to maintain stability during sensitive underwater operations, making it indispensable for search-and-rescue missions, underwater inspections, and diver training.

The vessel received a ceremonial welcome in Colombo, underscoring the growing warmth in bilateral ties. Commanding Officer Commander Sailesh Tyagi held discussions with Rear Admiral SJ Kumara on operational cooperation and shared maritime challenges. Beyond professional engagements, the visit includes social interactions, sports events, and joint yoga sessions to strengthen camaraderie between personnel.

In a notable humanitarian initiative, India will hand over BHISM cubes under the Aarogya Maitri programme. These portable medical units can handle up to 200 emergency cases and are designed for rapid disaster response. India will also supply 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to enhance Sri Lanka’s maritime security.

The exercise highlights the deepening India–Sri Lanka maritime partnership, built on shared geography and security interests. With cooperation spanning training, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian assistance, both nations continue to strengthen regional stability. Aligned with India’s MAHASAGAR vision, the deployment reflects a balanced approach of defence collaboration and humanitarian outreach, reinforcing a shared commitment to a secure Indian Ocean.
