India has marked a significant milestone in its defence capabilities with the commissioning of INS Aridaman , the third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine developed under its classified programme. The induction of this vessel strengthens the naval component of India’s nuclear triad , a crucial element of its strategic deterrence. As a sea-based platform, it enhances the country’s second-strike capability , ensuring survivability even in adverse scenarios.

Built at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) programme , INS Aridaman is a strong example of India’s push toward indigenous defence manufacturing . With over 90 percent of its systems developed domestically, contributions from DRDO , the Indian Navy , and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) have been central, particularly in developing the onboard nuclear reactor. Although early stages of the programme benefited from limited Russian assistance, the submarine reflects a largely self-reliant and technologically evolved platform.

INS Aridaman follows INS Arihant (commissioned in 2016) and INS Arighat (2024), representing the next phase in India’s SSBN evolution. It is believed to feature improved stealth , greater endurance, and the capability to deploy submarine-launched ballistic missiles like K-15 and K-4 , significantly enhancing operational reach. These advancements contribute to a more credible deterrence posture amid changing regional security dynamics.

With this induction, India strengthens its position among a select group of nations possessing nuclear-powered submarines , including the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China. Beyond its strategic value, INS Aridaman symbolizes India’s growing technological maturity and long-term commitment to building a robust and independent defence ecosystem .
