Indoors battle in Biel: India chase qualifier spot

India have sprung a surprise ahead of their Davis Cup World Group I clash against Switzerland, handing a debut to 20-year-old Dhakshineshwar Suresh alongside the returning Sumit Nagal. The tie, starting Friday on indoor hard courts in Biel, carries a ticket to next year’s Qualifiers.

Captain Rohit Rajpal backed the 6’5” Madurai-born youngster, currently ranked 626, to open proceedings against world No.155 Jerome Kym. Rajpal revealed that Dhakshineshwar’s big serve and flat groundstrokes were tailor-made for indoor conditions. “He has been training on indoor courts in the US. His game suits these surfaces, and he has beaten some good players recently,” said Rajpal.

Nagal, meanwhile, returns to Davis Cup action after two years. Ranked 292, he has struggled this season but reached a Challenger semifinal in Trieste last month. He will play Friday’s second singles against Marc Andrea Hüsler, the Swiss ranked 222.

India’s doubles line-up, however, took a hit with Yuki Bhambri ruled out due to a heel injury picked up during his US Open semifinal run. In his absence, Rothvik Bollipalli will pair with N Sriram Balaji against Dominic Stricker and Jakub Paul. “It’s unfortunate Yuki is missing, but we are confident in our combination,” Rajpal said.

Switzerland have also added reigning junior Australian Open champion Henry Bernet to bolster their depth.

India entered the tie after a 4–0 win over Togo, while Switzerland lost 1–3 to Spain. Historically, India lead Switzerland 2–1 in Davis Cup head-to-heads, last winning in Kolkata in 1993.

With indoor conditions rewarding sharp serves and clean hitting, the performances of Dhakshineshwar and Nagal will be crucial. Doubles could well decide the contest as India chase a place in the 2026 Davis Cup Qualifiers.
