India's largest airline, IndiGo, reported a narrowed net loss of Rs 1,879.1 crore for the September quarter of the current fiscal, compared with Rs 2,582.1 crore in the corresponding period last year, as higher fuel costs and rupee depreciation continued to weigh on profitability.

Total income of InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo's parent company, increased to Rs 24,311.9 crore in the second quarter from Rs 19,599.5 crore a year earlier, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday.

However, total expenses surged to Rs 26,188.4 crore during the quarter. Aircraft fuel expenses jumped 67.2 per cent to Rs 9,966.8 crore, significantly impacting the airline's financial performance.

IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh said the seasonally weak September quarter was marked by exceptionally high fuel costs and continued geopolitical turmoil.

The airline responded by reducing capacity and implementing yield management measures, which helped support revenue performance but only partially offset the increase in costs, Walsh said in a statement. Despite these measures, the company reported a net loss of around Rs 1,900 crore.

During the September quarter, IndiGo reduced its capacity by 1 per cent to 40.8 billion Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs), an industry measure of passenger-carrying capacity. The number of passengers flown declined 4.7 per cent to 27.5 million.

Looking ahead, the airline expects capacity, measured in ASKs, to grow in the low single digits in the December quarter compared with the same period last year.

Walsh said IndiGo remained focused on addressing near-term operational and financial challenges while continuing to invest in its long-term growth.

He added that India's long-term aviation prospects remained strong, with the airline prioritising safe and reliable operations, cost discipline and measured expansion to create sustainable value.

Shares of IndiGo closed unchanged at Rs 4,680 on the BSE on Thursday.
