IndiGo fined ₹20 lakh by DGCA over pilot training issue

IndiGo Airlines’ parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, has been fined ₹20 lakh by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for allegedly failing to use the required qualified flight simulators while training pilots at Category C aerodromes (smaller airports).

The airline said it received the DGCA notice on September 26 and is currently contesting the order with the relevant appellate authority. IndiGo also clarified that the fine will not have any significant impact on its financials or operations. The company added that the delay in informing the stock exchanges was unintentional and caused by internal communication delays.

Meanwhile, India’s domestic aviation sector continues to grow in 2025, although passenger numbers in August saw a slight dip compared to July. From January to August, airlines carried 1,107.26 lakh passengers, a 4.99% increase from 1,054.66 lakh in the same period last year. However, monthly traffic in August fell by 1.4% from July.

IndiGo maintained its position as the largest domestic airline, flying 83.14 lakh passengers in August, which accounted for a 64.2% market share. While slightly down from July’s 65.2%, the airline has consistently held over 63% of the market throughout the year.
