IndiGo Eyes Future Aircraft Technologies, Plans Major Fleet Decision Around 2030

India's largest airline, IndiGo, plans to wait until around 2030 before placing its next major aircraft order as it evaluates the emergence of next-generation aircraft technologies that promise greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions and reduced operating costs. Speaking, Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline has intentionally paused fresh aircraft commitments beyond its existing order book to ensure it can capitalize on the next wave of aviation innovation.

"We want to see what happens with the next generation aircraft. Whoever launches it and whenever it arrives, that will shape the future of this company beyond the current generation of aircraft," Bhatia said.

The airline, which marks 20 years of operations next month, has grown from operating a single aircraft in 2006 to a fleet of more than 440 aircraft serving over 140 destinations. IndiGo currently has more than 900 aircraft on order, including 60 Airbus A350-900 widebody jets, with deliveries extending through 2035. It also holds options to acquire 40 additional A350s, depending on future market conditions.

Bhatia said the airline's existing order pipeline positions it well for the coming decade. However, IndiGo could place a top-up order if required before next-generation aircraft enter commercial service. The carrier expects deliveries of its A350-900s from 2028, supporting its expansion into long-haul international operations, while the induction of A321XLR aircraft will further strengthen its international network.

Alongside fleet expansion, IndiGo is also reshaping its financing strategy by shifting from operating leases to finance leases for new aircraft. According to Bhatia, the move will lower the airline's long-term cost structure while providing greater operational flexibility, allowing it to adapt its fleet strategy as market conditions evolve.

In FY2026, IndiGo allocated USD 820 million for aircraft purchases through its GIFT City entity. Bhatia emphasized that access to advanced aircraft technology would remain a key consideration in future fleet decisions, noting that the airline aims to avoid being locked into older-generation aircraft as newer, more efficient models become available. Despite ongoing global supply chain disruptions affecting aircraft production and engine availability, IndiGo has remained largely insulated from delivery delays, enabling it to sustain rapid expansion. The airline carried more than 123 million passengers in FY26, operates over 2,200 daily flights, and commands more than 66% of India's domestic aviation market.
