In a significant step toward digitalising India’s aviation experience, IndiGo and Digi Yatra Foundation have completed an app-to-app integration that allows passengers to share their boarding passes seamlessly between the two platforms.

The collaboration will enable passengers flying with IndiGo to send their boarding pass directly from the IndiGo mobile app to the Digi Yatra app after completing web check-in. The new feature eliminates the need to manually scan QR codes or upload digital boarding passes, a process that previously caused delays for travellers during the airport check-in and security stages.

Digi Yatra, built on a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework, uses facial biometric technology to verify passengers, allowing them to move through airport checkpoints without physical documents. The system aims to create a secure, contactless, and paperless travel experience, while maintaining data privacy and regulatory compliance.

According to IndiGo, the integration ensures that passenger consent is obtained at every step and that only essential data is shared with airport verifiers. The exchange of information happens offline through deep linking between the two apps meaning no cloud servers or external data storage are involved, a move that aligns with the “privacy by design” principles underpinning Digi Yatra’s architecture. “Our mission is to transform air travel into a seamless, secure, and paperless experience for every passenger. This collaboration with IndiGo marks a significant milestone in that journey,” said Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation. “By integrating our technology directly with IndiGo’s app, we are enabling travelers to enjoy faster check-ins, smoother boarding, and enhanced convenience.”

Echoing the sentiment, Neetan Chopra, Chief Information and Digital Officer at IndiGo, said the partnership reinforces the airline’s focus on leveraging digital innovation to enhance passenger experience. “Every year, we fly millions of customers who trust us for our promise of safe, on-time, and hassle-free travel. This partnership takes that commitment a step further by enabling a smooth, contactless boarding journey,” Chopra noted.

Industry observers say the integration marks a key milestone in India’s digital travel evolution. With more airlines expected to join the Digi Yatra ecosystem, experts believe such collaborations could set new benchmarks for biometric authentication, paperless verification, and data-secure travel infrastructure in the country.

As the aviation industry increasingly embraces AI, identity tech, and mobile-first interfaces, the IndiGo–Digi Yatra integration could serve as a model for how airlines and digital identity systems can converge to simplify passenger journeys while maintaining stringent privacy and security standards.

The integration between IndiGo and Digi Yatra marks a major milestone in India’s move toward fully digital, contactless air travel, but it also comes with a set of potential downsides that warrant careful consideration.

Despite being designed around privacy-by-design principles, the use of facial biometrics and decentralized identity introduces inherent data privacy concerns. Facial data is extremely sensitive unlike passwords, it cannot be changed once compromised. While the system ensures user consent, passengers may not fully understand what they are agreeing to when they tap “Share with Digi Yatra.” Questions also remain about how long Digi Yatra retains biometric templates and how securely different airports handle this data, particularly as more airlines join the ecosystem, increasing exposure points for potential misuse or breaches.

Another challenge lies in biometric reliability. Facial recognition systems, though advanced, are not foolproof and may fail due to lighting issues, facial changes, or even algorithmic bias. False rejections could cause inconvenience at boarding gates, especially during peak travel periods. On the technical side, the integration heavily depends on smartphone compatibility and connectivity. Passengers need up-to-date devices and operating systems to use both apps effectively, meaning older phones or software versions might not support deep linking properly, forcing manual verification. This not only slows down the process but could also widen the digital divide between tech-savvy users and others.

While the system’s offline data transfer improves privacy by avoiding cloud-based storage, it limits real-time monitoring and fraud detection. If a passenger’s phone is lost or compromised, stored credentials could be misused unless the device is well protected. Additionally, deep linking relies on app-level sandboxing, and a security flaw or outdated app version could expose sensitive data. Operationally, airports face new challenges too. Coordinating between IndiGo’s infrastructure, Digi Yatra’s identity system, and airport security requires precision. Technical glitches or synchronization failures could create delays rather than efficiency. Staff training is also critical without it, unfamiliar passengers may find the process confusing.

There are also inclusivity concerns. Fully digital, biometric-based travel may inadvertently exclude elderly passengers, those without smartphones, or people uncomfortable with sharing their facial data. Awareness and accessibility remain limited, particularly in smaller cities, potentially restricting the system’s adoption. As more airlines join Digi Yatra, maintaining interoperability and uniform standards becomes increasingly complex. Each new integration introduces risks around version compatibility, data encryption, and consent management.

In summary, while the IndiGo–Digi Yatra integration promises a faster, safer, and paperless travel experience, it must be balanced with transparency, inclusivity, and strong safeguards. Success will depend on how effectively the system manages privacy, biometric reliability, and airport operations while ensuring that the drive toward digital transformation in Indian aviation remains both secure and equitable.
