IndiGo Cancels 180 Flights from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Government to Redistribute Routes

IndiGo cancelled around 180 flights from Bengaluru and Hyderabad on Tuesday, extending the airline’s operational crisis to the eighth consecutive day . At Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, 58 flights were cancelled, including 14 arrivals and 44 departures. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport saw 121 cancellations , comprising 58 arrivals and 63 departures.

The disruptions come amid a broader meltdown affecting six metro airports Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata . On Monday alone, IndiGo had cancelled over 560 flights nationwide, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

The airline attributes the cancellations to crew shortages, technical issues, operational backlogs, and high winter travel demand , which have created a cascading effect across its network.

In response, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said the government would reduce IndiGo’s slots and winter schedule routes as a penalty for the prolonged disruption. Curtailed routes will be temporarily handed over to other domestic carriers, allowing them to expand operations and capture high-demand traffic. The routes will be returned to IndiGo once it demonstrates operational stability.

IndiGo, controlled by Rahul Bhatia, operates over 2,200 flights daily , serving around 90 domestic and 40 international destinations, and commands over 65% of India’s domestic traffic . The scale of the disruption underscores the airline’s central role in India’s aviation sector and the widespread impact of its operational issues.

Passengers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru continue to face uncertainty, scrambling for rebookings or alternative flights, while other carriers step in to fill gaps caused by IndiGo’s cancellations.
