IndiGo Appoints William Walsh as New CEO

India’s largest airline, IndiGo , on Tuesday announced the appointment of William “Willie” Walsh as its new CEO , subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh, an aviation industry veteran, is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) , the global trade body representing over 300 airlines. His tenure at IATA concludes on July 31 , and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3 .

The announcement comes less than three weeks after the sudden exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers .

Walsh, widely known as Willie , previously led British Airways as CEO and later headed International Airlines Group (IAG) , which owns Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling, Level, and British Airways . He is recognised for his operational expertise, cost discipline, and focus on customer-centric airline management . Under his leadership, both BA and IAG expanded globally, streamlined operations, and strengthened their market positions.

Commenting on the appointment, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said:

Walsh’s global aviation experience, regulatory insight, and strategic vision are expected to guide IndiGo as it continues to expand both domestically and internationally , maintaining its position as India’s largest airline while pursuing operational excellence and innovation.
