India’s U17 World Cup Dream Ends After Defeat to Uzbekistan
India’s hopes of securing a place in the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup came to a disappointing end after a 0-3 defeat against Uzbekistan in the AFC U17 Asian Cup in Jeddah on Sunday.
After suffering a heavy 0-4 loss to Australia in their opening match, the Bibiano Fernandes-coached side entered the contest knowing that only a victory could keep their quarterfinal and World Cup qualification hopes alive. However, the Indian youngsters once again struggled against a stronger and more clinical opponent.
Uzbekistan looked sharper from the beginning and controlled large phases of the game with quick passing and aggressive attacking football. Their pressure finally paid off in the 32nd minute when Laziz Abduraimov found the back of the net to hand his side the lead.
India tried to respond after the break, but things became more difficult when midfielder Wangkhem Denny Singh accidentally turned the ball into his own net in the 60th minute while attempting to clear a dangerous move. The own goal visibly dented India’s confidence.
With India pushing forward in search of a comeback, Uzbekistan sealed the contest in the 78th minute through Akhrorbek Ravshanbekov , who calmly finished to make it 3-0.
The defeat confirmed India’s exit from the tournament and also ended their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup through merit. Only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals and earn World Cup berths.
India had previously appeared in the FIFA U17 World Cup 2017 as the host nation. But this campaign once again highlighted the gap between India and some of Asia’s stronger footballing nations.
Despite the disappointing results, the tournament offered valuable exposure to the young Indian squad, many of whom are still at the beginning of their football journey. The challenge now will be to learn from these setbacks and build a stronger pathway for the future of Indian football.
