India’s Trade Pact Calendar: EU Implementation, Canada Talks and Chile Progress

India’s trade push is moving ahead on several fronts, with the government preparing for implementation of the India-EU trade pact while negotiations with Canada and Chile continue.

India-EU pact:

The India-EU free trade agreement has moved beyond negotiations. The two sides concluded talks in January 2026, and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on September 21 that the pact is expected to come into force in the coming months. He said EU Parliament ratification could take about three months, with implementation likely within six to seven months.

The agreement will provide Indian exporters access to the European Union market. Under the deal announced by the two sides, the EU will eliminate import duties on 90 per cent of Indian goods from the first day of implementation. Duties on another three per cent of products will be removed in phases over seven years.

India-Chile CEPA:

Negotiations with Chile are continuing. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal recently visited the country to review progress in the talks. Goyal said the discussions were moving forward and that some developments could be expected in the coming months. He did not provide a specific date for conclusion or implementation.

India-Canada CEPA:

India and Canada have accelerated negotiations on their proposed new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The fourth round ended on September 18, while the fifth round is scheduled from October 5 to 9. Both countries are aiming to conclude the negotiations by the end of 2026.

Goyal said the next 90 days would be an important period for India-Canada bilateral relations. Two-way trade between the countries stood at USD 30.4 billion in 2025, with an ambition to raise it to USD 70 billion by 2030.

India’s major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals. Key imports from Canada include pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertilisers, paper and crude petroleum.

The three trade tracks are at different stages, with the EU agreement awaiting ratification and implementation, Chile negotiations under review, and Canada talks entering another round in October.
