India’s Saudi dilemma?

India’s oil journey appears to be taking a strategic turn. While the country continues to increase crude imports from Russia, its long-standing relationship with Saudi Arabia is showing signs of a potential shift.

India is among the world’s largest crude importers, relying on foreign suppliers for over 80% of its needs. This makes energy security more than a commercial issue—it is a national imperative. Historically, Saudi Arabia has been a key supplier, not only providing crude but also offering employment opportunities for millions of Indian workers whose remittances have contributed significantly to the Indian economy. The bilateral ties have long been robust.

However, global dynamics are changing. Following Western sanctions on Russia, Russian crude has become available at lower prices. India, as a major market, is being offered special incentives, including payment in rupees and streamlined shipping arrangements. This has naturally drawn India closer to Moscow. The cost advantage of cheaper “black gold” flowing into Indian ports is undeniable.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia’s recent security agreement with Pakistan has raised eyebrows in New Delhi. While India has not publicly condemned the move, there is internal unease. Strengthening ties with Pakistan is perceived as indirectly countering Indian interests.

Caught between Russia, which offers economic benefits, and Saudi Arabia, now seen as aligning with Pakistan, India faces a delicate balancing act. Rising Russian supplies and favorable terms are nudging India toward Moscow. Over time, this could reduce Saudi Arabia’s share of Indian imports while increasing Russia’s.

The rationale is straightforward: cheaper oil benefits the economy, while Saudi-Pakistan cooperation presents a strategic discomfort. Together, these factors naturally point to a shift.

Today, each barrel of Russian crude represents not just an energy purchase but a subtle realignment of India’s international relationships. Conversely, each transaction with Saudi Arabia carries an undercurrent of uncertainty. Ultimately, India appears to be steering its energy strategy toward self-respect, national interest, and global balance. The gradual tilt toward Russia is more than a commercial choice—it is a carefully considered strategic move. By leveraging Russian oil, India is sending a quiet but clear message in response to Saudi Arabia’s new alignment with Pakistan. Whether this strategy will play out smoothly in practice remains to be seen.
