India’s rail electrification nears completion, 42,600+ LHB coaches strengthen modernisation drive

India is rapidly transforming its railway network into a modern, cleaner, and more efficient system, with electrification of the broad-gauge network nearing completion and a massive surge in the production of modern LHB coaches.

Indian Railways has already electrified over 99% of its broad-gauge network , with the remaining stretches expected to be completed soon. Between 2019 and 2025 alone, more than 33,000 route kilometres were electrified, averaging over 15 route kilometres per day, almost equal to the entire railway network of Germany. This positions India among the world leaders in rail electrification, reducing diesel consumption, cutting carbon emissions, lowering operational costs, and improving train speed and efficiency. Once fully electrified, India will operate one of the largest fully electrified railway systems globally, supporting the country’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions.

In tandem with electrification, Indian Railways has achieved a remarkable milestone in coach production, manufacturing over 42,600 modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches in just 11 years , a figure 10 to 20 times higher than what was produced in the preceding decade. This dramatic increase reflects a deliberate effort to expand passenger capacity, improve travel safety, and enhance comfort to meet the growing demands of a rapidly urbanising and mobile population. LHB coaches, known for their advanced safety features, higher speed potential, and superior ride quality, are now the backbone of India’s long-distance and express train operations.

The surge in production also aligns with India’s strategy to modernise the railways at scale, replacing older coaches with energy-efficient, lightweight designs that allow faster, smoother, and safer journeys. The expansion supports growing passenger numbers, reduces congestion, and positions Indian Railways as a global benchmark for efficient and sustainable rail operations.
