India’s Para Powerlifting star strikes Gold

Adding to India’s growing strength in para sports, Vinay won gold in the 72kg junior category at the Para Powerlifting World Championships on Friday, showcasing the talent nurtured by the nation’s top coaches.

The 19-year-old from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, lifted 137kg, 142kg, and 147kg across his three attempts. Though his final lift of 147kg was ruled invalid, his successful 142kg effort was enough to edge out Poland’s Mikolaj Kociubinski, who lifted 141kg. Ecuador’s Sebastian F. claimed bronze with 137kg.

This victory marks Vinay’s second major international triumph. He previously won gold at the Para Powerlifting World Cup 2024 in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, competing in the 59kg junior category with a lift of 120kg.

Vinay’s journey is one of determination and resilience. Born into a modest family his father works as a daily wager he was discovered by J.P. Singh, coach of the Indian para powerlifting team, at a state-level meet. Under Singh’s mentorship, Vinay honed his skills and quickly rose to international prominence.

After the win, Vinay said, “This medal is not just mine, it belongs to everyone who believed in me when I had nothing. From Gorakhpur’s small streets to the world stage in Cairo, this journey was not easy. I dedicate this gold to my family, my country, and every young athlete who dares to dream beyond circumstances.”

India fielded a strong team of 25 para powerlifters at the championships, including three juniors and 22 senior athletes, reflecting the country’s growing dominance in para powerlifting.

Vinay’s golden performance is a shining example of talent, perseverance, and mentorship, inspiring a new generation of athletes to aim for the global stage.
