India’s Chess No. 1 Holds World No. 1 Carlsen in Sweden Opener
Arjun Erigaisi , India’s top-ranked Grandmaster, started the 31st TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament in Malmö, Sweden, with a strong result against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen on May 1, securing a hard-fought draw in Round 1 .
The official crosstable confirmed the outcome: Magnus Carlsen ½ - ½ Arjun Erigaisi . It was a solid opening statement from the Indian GM, who had to navigate a demanding game under the tournament’s special Malmö rules . Under these rules, players cannot agree to a draw before move 40 , forcing both sides into a deep middlegame battle before peace is eventually agreed.
Carlsen , meanwhile, was returning to classical tournament chess after a long break since Norway Chess in Stavanger last June. This was also his first closed round robin classical event outside Norway since Tata Steel 2023 . He faced one of the most in form young players on the circuit.
Arjun Erigaisi , who recently slipped outside the world’s top 10 after a few inconsistent results, showed no signs of pressure. Against the highest rated player in the world, he remained steady, accurate, and resilient throughout a tense contest.
Elsewhere in Round 1, Nodirbek Abdusattorov defeated Jiner Zhu with the white pieces, while Jorden van Foreest and Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş shared the point. The game between Andy Woodward and Nils Grandelius is still to be updated.
The draw against Carlsen carries added significance. Earlier this year at the FIDE Freestyle World Championship , Erigaisi had also beaten Carlsen in a standout performance. This latest result further strengthens his growing reputation at the very top level of world chess.
The tournament features seven rounds and runs until May 7 at the Elite Plaza Hotel in Malmö . Indian chess followers will be closely tracking Erigaisi’s progress after this confident start.
