India’s Next Big Surveillance Drone: DRDO HALE UAV Gets Bharat Forge, Pratt & Whitney

India’s indigenous high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle programme is entering a crucial engineering phase, with Bharat Forge and Pratt & Whitney Canada joining hands to examine propulsion for the aircraft being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

So what will this UAV actually do? In simple terms, it is being designed as a long-duration eye in the sky, capable of flying at very high altitude for more than a day, watching large areas and sending intelligence to commanders without putting a pilot at risk.

The aircraft is intended primarily for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions over both land and sea. Its sensors could monitor borders, track activity over the ocean, identify movements on the ground and provide persistent imagery and electronic intelligence. Flying at around 40,000 feet would give it a wide field of view, while an endurance of more than 25 hours would allow it to remain over an area for prolonged surveillance rather than repeatedly returning to base.

The proposed platform is currently reported to be a roughly 6-tonne-class aircraft, capable of carrying around 2,000 kg of payload. That payload could accommodate sophisticated systems such as electro-optical and infrared cameras, synthetic aperture radar and electronic intelligence equipment. These figures remain development-stage targets and could change as the aircraft is finalised.

Under the new collaboration, Pratt & Whitney Canada will evaluate the compatibility, performance and installation requirements of its advanced turboprop engines, while Bharat Forge will lead engine-airframe integration.

Propulsion is a major issue because such an aircraft needs an engine that can provide sustained, reliable and fuel-efficient power at high altitude. Reports have also discussed a 1,000–1,200 hp-class indigenous engine route, including possible adaptation of technology associated with DRDO’s HTSE-1200 turboshaft.

The programme remains under development, with no officially confirmed maiden-flight date or publicly disclosed total development cost. DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment has sought an industry development-cum-production partner, bringing private industry deeper into the project.

The HALE effort builds on India’s experience with platforms such as TAPAS but aims to go considerably higher, carry more equipment and stay airborne longer. The larger objective is to give India a persistent, indigenous surveillance capability for monitoring its borders and vast maritime areas while reducing dependence on foreign unmanned systems and propulsion technology.
