Mumbai came to a standstill on Monday as thousands of heartbroken fans, celebrities and dignitaries lined the streets to bid a final farewell to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away at the age of 92 following multi organ failure at Breach Candy Hospital, where she had been admitted on Saturday evening due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. A voice that defined the soundtrack of an entire nation for over eight decades had fallen silent, and the grief that poured onto the streets of Mumbai was as immense as her legacy .

The Antim Darshan was held from 10 am to 2 pm at her residence in Casa Grande Tower A, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel, where an unending stream of admirers came to take one last look at the woman they had loved through every emotion of their lives. Adorned in her favourite white and yellow blooms, her mortal remains were then carried in a white hearse bearing a large photograph of Ashatai dressed in a traditional Maharashtrian nath, an image of a woman eternally rooted in her identity. The police band played a sombre farewell as the cortege began the five kilometre journey to Shivaji Park in Dadar, and residents along the route showered flowers upon the vehicle, weeping openly.

Asha Bhosle’s son Anand Bhosle performed the last rites after she received full state honours at Shivaji Park. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had paid his last respects at her residence on Sunday evening, offering floral tributes, while State Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, legislators Sunil Shinde and Prasad Lad, and music composers Anu Malik and Abu Malik were among the dignitaries who visited her home.

The gathering at Shivaji Park brought together leading figures from cinema and culture. Aamir Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray , and composer Anu Malik paid their respects at the crematorium, while Tabu, Sachin Tendulkar and A. R. Rahman were also present to bid farewell to the legendary singer. A visibly moved Meena Mangeshkar arrived in a wheelchair to pay her respects to her sister, while Tabu and Vicky Kaushal were seen comforting her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle.

Across a career spanning more than seven decades , Asha Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs in more than 20 Indian and foreign languages, a feat recognised by the Guinness World Records. She won two National Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. Her final major concert was in Dubai in December 2024, where she performed alongside Sonu Nigam and even broke into impromptu dance moves.

The IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Indian Premier League at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday observed a minute of silence in her honour, with both teams wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. Tributes flooded in from across the country, with leading names from the film fraternity expressing their grief and admiration.

She leaves behind a universe of melodies , from the achingly tender Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar to the seductive whisper of Dil Cheez Kya Hai songs that were not merely sung but lived.

Mumbai said goodbye to Ashatai on Monday. But her voice will never leave.
