India began their T20I tour of New Zealand in spectacular fashion, chasing down a formidable target of 226 runs to defeat the hosts by four wickets in a high-scoring series opener at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday. Sanju Samson’s explosive half-century, Shreyas Iyer’s composed innings and Naman Dhir’s late assault powered India to 230/6 in 19.4 overs, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Chasing 226, India made their intentions clear from the outset. Samson smashed 67 off just 33 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes, while Abhishek Sharma provided an equally aggressive start with 29 off 12 deliveries. The opening partnership yielded 93 runs in just 5.5 overs, putting India firmly in control of the chase.

New Zealand fought back through their spinners, with Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner claiming two wickets each. Bracewell dismissed Abhishek and Tilak Varma, while Santner removed Samson and Ishan Kishan to briefly unsettle the Indian batting line-up.

With India needing stability after the early setbacks, captain Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 off 28 balls, keeping the chase on track. Axar Patel added a valuable 24 from 14 deliveries before Lockie Ferguson dismissed him, leaving India needing a strong finish.

That responsibility fell to Naman Dhir, who delivered a match-defining unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls, including five fours and two sixes. His remarkable strike rate of 280 helped India overcome the late pressure, with Nitish Kumar Reddy remaining unbeaten on two as the visitors crossed the finish line with two balls to spare.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 225/4 in 20 overs after India captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field. Glenn Phillips led the home side’s charge with a blistering unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes. Finn Allen contributed 45 off 24 balls, while Bevon Jacobs provided a late boost with 31 off 16 deliveries.

India’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with Axar Patel conceding 51 runs and Bhuvneshwar Kumar giving away 49. Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Axar picked up one wicket each.

Samson was named Player of the Match for his attacking contribution. The victory gave India their highest successful run chase in T20I cricket, setting an emphatic tone for the remainder of the series. The second T20I will be played in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24.
