India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav continued the country’s impressive run at the 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships by clinching a silver medal in the snatch and an overall bronze in the women’s 53kg category here on Wednesday.

Competing in the newly introduced weight division, Gyaneshwari produced a strong overall effort of 194kg , lifting 88kg in snatch and 106kg in clean and jerk . Her 88kg attempt earned her the silver medal in the snatch segment, while her combined total secured the bronze medal overall.

The Indian lifter also achieved a personal best in the category and improved the national benchmark in the process, underlining her growing stature on the continental stage.

China’s Jinlan Zhao dominated the competition to win the gold medal with a total lift of 216kg , while Vietnam’s Hoai Huong Nguyen claimed the overall silver medal with an aggregate of 195kg , finishing just one kilogram ahead of Gyaneshwari.

Another Indian participant in the category, Koyel Bar , finished fifth with a combined effort of 188kg , including 84kg in snatch and 104kg in clean and jerk.

Earlier in the competition, Komal Kohar had opened India’s medal account by winning bronze in the women’s 48kg category on Monday.

The continental championships, being held at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar from May 11 to 17, have brought together nearly 178 weightlifters from 28 Asian countries and two Commonwealth nations.

The tournament also serves as an important qualifying event for the 2026 Commonwealth Games , making it a key competition for athletes aiming to secure international selection and improve their rankings ahead of the multi-sport event.
