India’s electricity consumption touched an unprecedented high on Thursday, with the country recording a peak power demand of 270.82 GW , as a severe heat wave intensified across large parts of north, west, and central India. The latest figure surpassed Wednesday’s record of 265.44 GW , marking the fourth consecutive day of all-time high power demand and highlighting the growing strain extreme summer conditions are placing on the nation’s energy infrastructure.

The Union Power Ministry said the peak demand was successfully met at 3:45 PM , during peak solar generation hours. Officials linked the sharp increase in electricity usage to rising dependence on air conditioners, desert coolers, fans, and refrigeration systems as temperatures in several regions hovered around 45 degrees Celsius . The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heat wave conditions are likely to persist across northwest and central India over the coming days.

India’s power demand has climbed steadily throughout the week. Peak consumption stood at 257.37 GW on Monday , rose to 260.45 GW on Tuesday , increased further to 265.44 GW on Wednesday , and finally breached the 270 GW mark on Thursday. The surge has already exceeded the government’s summer projection of 270 GW, indicating the intensity of this year’s heat conditions.

Data released by the ministry showed that thermal power plants contributed 62.8% of the electricity supplied during Thursday’s peak demand period. However, renewable energy played a major supporting role, with solar power accounting for 22% , while wind and hydroelectric energy together contributed nearly 11%.

The latest numbers also underline India’s rapidly growing electricity requirements. In comparison, the country’s peak power demand was 242.77 GW during the summer of 2025 , while the 250 GW mark was considered historic just two years ago.

Energy experts say the situation demonstrates the increasing importance of renewable energy, battery storage systems, and stronger transmission infrastructure in maintaining grid stability during extreme weather events. Although India has crossed 532 GW of installed power capacity , coal continues to dominate actual electricity generation because renewable energy remains weather-dependent.

Despite mounting pressure on the grid, the government maintained that coal supplies at thermal power plants remain adequate and are being closely monitored to avoid shortages or widespread outages.
