India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves have hit a record high. For the week ending January 23, the country’s reserves rose by $8.053 billion (around ₹67,000 crore), reaching an all-time peak of $709.413 billion , the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said. In the previous week, reserves had already recorded a substantial increase of $14 billion. Crossing the $700 billion mark further strengthens the country’s economic position.

Forex reserves are foreign currency and gold holdings that a country maintains to buy goods (such as crude oil, electronics, etc.) from abroad or to protect the value of its own currency in emergencies. The higher the reserves, the more secure the country’s economic position is considered. Last September, India’s reserves had reached $704.89 billion , before declining slightly as the RBI sold dollars to stabilise the rupee. They have now shown remarkable growth once again.

Gold played a key role in the recent rise. The value of gold reserves at the RBI increased by $5.635 billion in a single week, reaching $123.088 billion . This growth was driven by rising international gold prices and the RBI’s strategic accumulation of gold. Higher gold reserves strengthen the country’s resilience against global economic shocks.

The largest component of forex reserves, foreign currency assets , rose by $2.367 billion to $562.885 billion . These include not only the US dollar but also other major currencies such as the euro, pound, and yen. Fluctuations in the value of these currencies against the dollar also affect the total reserves. The RBI noted that the current reserves are sufficient to meet more than 11 months of import requirements.

Apart from cash and gold, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) grew by $33 million to $18.737 billion . Similarly, other IMF reserves held by India rose by $18 million to $4.703 billion . Overall, India’s forex holdings increased by approximately $56 billion over the past year.
