India's First Private Orbital Rocket Vikram-1 Set for Historic Launch on July 18

India is on the verge of achieving another milestone in its space journey as Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch Vikram-1 , the country's first privately developed orbital-class rocket , on July 18 . The maiden test flight, named Mission Aagaman, is scheduled to lift off at 11:30 am from the first launch pad at SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota , marking a defining moment for India's rapidly expanding private space sector.

Unlike previous private missions, Vikram-1 will become the first orbital rocket designed, built and launched by an Indian private company from Indian soil. Authorities have already issued the required airspace and maritime notices, designating restricted zones along the rocket's flight path ahead of the launch.

According to Skyroot Aerospace, all stages of the rocket have been successfully integrated and stacked on the launch pad. Final system checks, including telemetry and radar interface tests, have also been completed, clearing the vehicle for its maiden flight.

The mission carries multiple technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot's own SCOPE platform. It will also transport Cosmos Diamonds' "Cosmic Bloom" artwork along with a micro-art payload, showcasing the growing diversity of commercial space missions.

Skyroot Co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana said the company has completed every possible ground test and is now eager to evaluate the rocket's performance in actual flight conditions. The mission is expected to generate valuable flight data that will help the company refine future launches and establish a regular launch schedule.

Co-founder and COO Naga Bharath Daka described the mission as the outcome of nearly 3,000 days of dedicated work , involving around 1,000 people and more than 400 suppliers . He said the launch represents much more than a single mission, reflecting India's ambition to build a globally competitive commercial launch capability.

Standing as tall as a seven-storey building , Vikram-1 features an all-carbon composite structure, 3D-printed engines, and high-thrust solid rocket boosters developed in-house. The launch vehicle is designed to carry small satellites weighing up to 350 kg into Low Earth Orbit. During its maiden mission, it will attempt to place payloads into a 450-km orbit at a 60-degree inclination.

Mission Aagaman follows the successful Vikram-S suborbital mission in 2022 , and could become the launch that firmly establishes India's private space industry on the global stage.
