India’s first dental innovation hub unveiled

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, today inaugurated the Dental Technology Innovation Hub at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) in New Delhi. The Hub has been established with support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Singh stated that the Hub represents a significant advancement in the field of dentistry, aligning with the government’s progressive approach to science and technology. The facility is designed to serve as a cost-effective platform for research, diagnostics, and therapy, while contributing to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by reducing dependence on imported dental implants and equipment.

The Hub is expected to focus on the development and testing of advanced dental technologies, including biodegradable implants, AI-driven diagnostic tools, IoT-enabled devices, robotics for precision surgery, and 3D-printed prosthetics, ensuring high standards of quality control and patient safety.

The Minister highlighted that the Hub has been structured as an inclusive innovation ecosystem, creating opportunities for start-ups, MSMEs, and innovators. He emphasised that the initiative reflects the government’s “whole-of-government” and “whole-of-nation” approach pursued over the last 11 years.

Dr. Singh recalled that in earlier times, most dental and medical implants were imported, and expressed satisfaction that Indian institutions are now producing synthetic and biodegradable materials that meet global standards. He noted that India has progressed from being nearly a decade behind in specialised medical procedures to becoming a world-class hub attracting medical tourism.

The Minister outlined several policy measures supporting the Hub, including the National Medical Devices Policy 2023 and the Medical Devices Rules 2017, which promote state-of-the-art, cost-effective medical facilities nationwide. He emphasised the importance of awareness, accessibility, and affordability in healthcare, noting that while affordability and accessibility are improving, greater public awareness remains a priority.

In a move to strengthen the healthcare workforce, the government has decided to increase medical seats by about 1,000 at the undergraduate level and 5,000 at the postgraduate level, including in dental sciences. Dr. Singh also appreciated the role of public–private collaboration, stating that integration between the two sectors is critical for innovation and progress.

Dr. Singh highlighted the growing demand for dental and medical care due to rising life expectancy and stressed the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, as dental science intersects with fields such as endocrinology, cardiovascular medicine, and diabetes management. He also underscored the use of AI tools and recommended further integration with engineering and technology institutions to strengthen the innovation ecosystem.

Concluding his address, Dr. Singh stated that the new Hub will play a critical role in preparing the dentists of 2047 and providing the backbone for a Viksit Bharat.
