India’s electric vehicle exports recorded a sharp increase in the first quarter of 2026-27, with Europe emerging as the leading destination for Indian electric motor cars, according to Commerce Ministry data.

Export earnings from electric motor cars surged to USD 369 million during the April-June quarter, compared with USD 22.2 million in the same period a year earlier. Export volumes also rose significantly to 10,802 vehicles from 1,309 units, highlighting the growing global competitiveness of India’s electric mobility industry.

Spain emerged as India’s largest export market, with shipments valued at USD 146.4 million. A total of 4,007 electric vehicles were exported to the country, accounting for nearly 40% of India’s total exports in the category.

The United Kingdom ranked second, importing electric cars worth USD 78.7 million. Shipments to the UK increased to 2,646 vehicles from just one vehicle in the corresponding quarter last year, signalling stronger acceptance of Indian-made EVs in one of Europe’s most developed electric vehicle markets.

Other European markets also recorded substantial demand. India exported electric cars worth USD 25.1 million to Germany, USD 21.1 million to Norway and USD 21 million to Denmark. Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Sweden and Poland also registered imports of Indian electric vehicles.

Beyond Europe, India expanded its EV export footprint across the Asia-Pacific region. Japan imported USD 13.4 million worth of electric cars, while shipments were also recorded to Israel, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea.

Nepal remained an important neighbouring market, importing EVs worth USD 8.1 million. Meanwhile, exports to Latin American markets including Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Costa Rica indicated further opportunities for diversification.

The strong export performance reflects rising international acceptance of Indian-made EVs, supported by improving quality, safety standards and competitive pricing. The broader geographical reach could strengthen India’s position as a global manufacturing hub for sustainable mobility and help domestic automakers integrate more deeply into international EV supply chains.
