India’s Caribbean Connect: Jaishankar Highlights Diaspora as Living Bridge in Jamaica

In Kingston, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar presented a compelling picture of a nation in transformation while placing the spotlight on the people who carry India’s identity across the world. During his interaction with the Indian diaspora , Jaishankar spoke about India’s rapid progress in infrastructure, human development, and technology-driven governance , underlining how these changes are reshaping the country’s global presence.

At the heart of his address was the Indian-origin community in Jamaica, a group that embodies both history and continuity. Numbering around 70,000 people , this diaspora traces its roots to indentured labourers who arrived between 1845 and 1917 , primarily from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with some from South India. Today, they form nearly three per cent of Jamaica’s population and remain deeply connected to Indian culture, traditions, and heritage.

Jaishankar described the diaspora as a “living bridge” that has connected the two nations for nearly 180 years . His remarks found resonance in the words of Andrew Holness , who acknowledged the community’s meaningful contributions to Jamaica’s development. This mutual recognition reflects a relationship that goes beyond diplomacy and rests on shared history and cultural ties .

Highlighting India’s ongoing transformation, Jaishankar pointed to the country’s expanding infrastructure, its focus on improving quality of life, and the growing role of digital systems in governance and entrepreneurship . These developments, he suggested, are a source of pride for Indians worldwide.

The India–Jamaica relationship , he noted, is a story of continuity and change—anchored in a shared past and driven by present cooperation. As Jaishankar continues his Caribbean visit, the message is clear: India’s global journey is deeply connected to its diaspora, which remains one of its strongest links to the world.
