India’s Ambassador to China Holds Key Talks on Border and Cooperation
Vikram Doraiswami, India’s newly appointed ambassador to China, held talks with senior Chinese official Hou Yanqi in Beijing , focusing on developments along the India-China border and efforts to improve bilateral relations amid gradual normalisation between the two countries.
According to the Embassy of India in Beijing, the meeting involved a “productive exchange of views” on issues related to the border areas and reviewed the “positive momentum” in ties between the neighbouring nations. Both sides agreed to utilise existing diplomatic mechanisms to implement the vision of the leadership of both countries for a stable and mutually beneficial relationship.
The discussions come at a significant time as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to rebuild ties that deteriorated sharply following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh in 2020. The prolonged border tensions had strained diplomatic engagement, trade cooperation and people-to-people exchanges for nearly four years.
Doraiswami, a senior Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1992 batch, assumed charge as India’s envoy to China earlier this month. He formally began his diplomatic role after presenting his credentials to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on May 8.
Recent months have seen both countries take cautious steps towards restoring normalcy, including discussions on resuming direct flight services and easing visa procedures. Diplomatic engagements between officials from both sides have also increased as the two Asian powers seek to stabilise relations while continuing dialogue on unresolved border issues.
The meeting in Beijing is being viewed as another indication that both India and China are keen to maintain communication channels and prevent further escalation along the border while gradually improving broader bilateral cooperation.
