Ahmedabad is rapidly emerging as the centrepiece of India’s preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games , with several world class sporting venues expected to be completed by 2028 and 2029 .

The city’s ambitious infrastructure push is being led by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave, which already houses the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. Spread across 335 acres , the complex is set to host key events during the Games, including cricket, aquatics, tennis, and indoor competitions.

Officials said the aquatics centre , with a seating capacity of 12,000 , is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2029. A 24,000 seat tennis arena and an 18,000 capacity multipurpose indoor stadium are also expected to be ready the same year. The Narendra Modi Stadium , capable of accommodating more than one lakh spectators , will host cricket matches during the Games.

Another major venue is coming up at the Gujarat Police Academy complex in Karai , near Gandhinagar. The 143 acre facility will feature a 50,000 seat athletics stadium , targeted for completion by September 2028. A modern shooting range with indoor and outdoor facilities is also under development and is expected to be completed by March 2029.

India has proposed a 17 sport roster for the 2030 edition and is pushing for the inclusion of disciplines such as shooting, hockey, and badminton, which were removed from the upcoming Glasgow Games due to cost cutting measures.

The preparations are also being linked with nationwide sporting initiatives. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will lead Commonwealth Games Day celebrations in Ahmedabad alongside athletes, former medallists, and thousands of cycling enthusiasts, highlighting India’s growing sporting ambitions on the global stage.
