Indian-origin duo strengthen Australia’s U-19 World Cup squad
Australia has named a culturally diverse and talent-packed 15-member squad for the men’s U-19 World Cup, with two Indian-origin youngsters Aryan Sharma and John James making the cut for the tournament to be held in Namibia and Zimbabwe from January 15 to February 6. Their inclusion highlights the growing contribution of the Indian diaspora to Australia’s cricketing pipeline and strengthens the defending champions’ depth.
Aryan, a promising batter and slow left-arm spinner, and James, a right-arm medium-pace all-rounder, were part of the Australia squad that toured India for youth Tests and one-dayers in September. Both impressed the selectors with their composure and adaptability in subcontinental conditions.
The squad reflects Australia’s multicultural cricket landscape, featuring two Sri Lankan-origin players, Naden Cooray and Nitesh Samuel, and one Chinese-origin cricketer, Alex Lee Young. The blend of backgrounds and skill sets has been described as a key strength for the title defence.
Australia will enter the World Cup led by captain Oliver Peake, who has been a consistent performer in pathway cricket. Head coach Tim Nielsen said the squad was carefully crafted to balance batting, bowling, and all-round options that can withstand tournament pressure.
“We’re delighted to announce a strong and well-balanced squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Our focus has been on selecting a group with complementary skills that give us the best chance of success,” Nielsen said. He added that performances in the U-19 series against India and the National U19 Championship in Perth were crucial during selection.
The team is placed in Group A, alongside Ireland, Japan and Sri Lanka, and will arrive in Namibia in early January. Warm-up fixtures are scheduled from January 9 to 14. Whereas India’s U-19 team is placed in Group B.
Calling the tournament a “fantastic opportunity,” Nielsen said it will allow emerging players to showcase their potential on a global platform and test themselves against the world’s best.
