India and Nigeria are deepening security cooperation through a 10-day international training programme focused on stress management and emotional well-being for law-enforcement personnel. Led by Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) in partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the initiative combines professional training with institutional knowledge exchange.

Conducted in Abuja and at the FRSC Academy in Udi, Enugu State, the programme is expected to benefit about 1,000 personnel. Participants are drawn from the FRSC and major Nigerian security and paramilitary agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Fire Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The training addresses the psychological demands of modern law enforcement. Its key areas include stress management, emotional regulation, psychological resilience, self-management, behavioural awareness, peer support and effective coping mechanisms. These skills are particularly relevant for personnel exposed to road crashes, emergencies, disasters, security incidents, casualties and other high-pressure operational situations.

The expected outcome is a workforce that is more resilient, emotionally intelligent and professionally effective. Better stress management can help personnel maintain composure, sound judgement and effectiveness, while emotional regulation can improve responses during difficult or traumatic incidents. Peer-support skills can also encourage colleagues to identify and assist personnel facing operational strain.

The programme has significance beyond the immediate 10-day course. By integrating psychological preparedness into professional development, it reinforces the idea that effective policing requires mental resilience alongside technical and operational competence. With participants representing multiple agencies, the initiative also supports wider institutional learning and cross-agency capacity building.

RRU plays a central role in this partnership. As an Institution of National Importance under India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, it contributes expertise in policing, security education, behavioural sciences, criminology, forensic investigation and professional training. Its international outreach enables India to share institutional experience while supporting Nigeria’s security agencies.

The initiative therefore represents a broader model of India–Nigeria security diplomacy, using education, specialised expertise and capacity building to strengthen policing, personnel well-being and long-term institutional cooperation.
