In a significant step toward ensuring sustainable space operations, two Indian space startups Pixxel and Cosmoserve Space have announced a strategic collaboration to develop and demonstrate space debris removal technologies in orbit .

Under the partnership, Bengaluru-based Pixxel, known for building advanced Earth-imaging satellites , will provide a satellite bus (platform) for Cosmoserve’s upcoming mission. The satellite bus forms the core structure of a spacecraft , supplying power, propulsion, and communication systems required to support mission payloads. Hyderabad-based Cosmoserve, which focuses on in-orbit servicing and debris mitigation solutions , will integrate its proprietary debris capture and removal systems onto this platform.

Pixxel’s founder and CEO, Awais Ahmed , emphasized that responsible access to space requires active management of orbital environments , describing the collaboration as a natural extension of the company’s sustainability goals. Cosmoserve’s founder, Chiranjeevi Phanindra B , highlighted Pixxel’s engineering track record particularly the successful deployment of its Firefly satellite constellation as a key factor behind the partnership.

The timing of the collaboration reflects a growing global urgency . With thousands of defunct satellites and fragments of debris orbiting Earth, the risk of collisions has increased sharply. Such incidents can damage critical infrastructure, including satellites used for navigation, weather forecasting, and communications . The cascading effect of collisions, often referred to as the Kessler Syndrome , could render certain orbits unusable if left unchecked.

Industry experts note that space debris removal is becoming a priority for both governments and private players , as the rapid expansion of satellite constellations intensifies congestion in low-Earth orbit. Missions like the Pixxel-Cosmoserve collaboration are seen as early but crucial steps toward building scalable, commercially viable debris mitigation systems.

As India’s private space sector continues to expand, this partnership signals a shift from satellite deployment to long-term orbital sustainability , positioning Indian startups at the forefront of solving one of space exploration’s most pressing challenges.
