In a historic move for regional T20 cricket, the upcoming sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will feature Indian cricketers for the very first time, adding a major boost to the tournament’s global appeal. The season will kick off on December 1, with matches scheduled across Colombo, Kandy, and Dambulla.

The organisers on Monday confirmed that Indian players will officially participate in the 2025 season, breaking new ground for the franchise league that has been steadily growing in stature since its inception(2020). Although the names of the Indian players are yet to be revealed, their inclusion has already generated significant buzz among fans and franchises alike.

The 2025 edition will feature 24 matches in total, including 20 league games and four playoffs. The contests will be hosted across three of Sri Lanka’s top venues the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy, and the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

As per the format, five franchises including Jaffna Kings, the defending champion will compete in a double round-robin league stage, where each team faces the others twice. The top four will then progress to the playoffs. Qualifier 1 will feature the top two teams, with the winner advancing directly to the final. The Eliminator will see the third- and fourth-placed sides battle it out, and the victor of that clash will take on the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 to decide the second finalist.

Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela said the scheduling was designed to offer players maximum exposure and competitive match practice ahead of a busy international calendar.

“The timing of this edition ensures players get quality preparation in the build-up to a global cricketing year,” Dodanwela said, adding that the league has become a “breeding ground for fresh talent.”

Over recent seasons, the LPL has provided a stage for several emerging stars to play alongside international names. Organisers expect this year’s edition, strengthened by the participation of Indian players, to take the competition to an even higher level of excitement and visibility.

Like the LPL, India’s Indian Premier League (IPL) is a high-profile T20 franchise tournament that attracts international stars, creating intense competition and fan excitement. Both leagues serve as platforms for emerging talent to shine on a global stage.
