Indian Pharma Association lauds transformative GST reforms as essential medicines become cheaper
The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) has welcomed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, as a transformative step toward making healthcare more affordable and accessible across India. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, these reforms are expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.
The GST reforms focus on lowering taxes on essential medicines and healthcare services. Under the new measures, the GST on most medicines has been reduced from 12% to 5%, while 36 critical life-saving drugs, including treatments for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and rare conditions, are now fully exempted from GST. Additionally, tax slabs have been rationalized for health and life insurance premiums, glucometers, and corrective spectacles, reducing overall healthcare costs.
Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General of the IPA, expressed strong support for these reforms, describing them as a “transformative shift” in India’s healthcare landscape. He emphasized that these measures will deliver direct savings to patients, ease the financial burden on families, and improve access to essential care, thereby strengthening healthcare security across the nation.
The IPA, representing 23 leading research-driven pharmaceutical companies, has committed to ensuring that the benefits of these reforms reach citizens swiftly and transparently, advancing the mission of affordable and accessible healthcare for all.
Healthcare experts have welcomed the move, noting that reduced taxation on medicines can lead to greater accessibility for low- and middle-income families, encourage timely treatment, and improve preventive care. The reforms align with the government’s broader vision of providing quality healthcare for every citizen, supporting initiatives that make India’s healthcare system more inclusive and patient-centric.
With the GST reforms now in effect, the Indian pharmaceutical industry and healthcare stakeholders are optimistic about a positive shift in the sector. By making essential medicines more affordable and streamlining taxes on healthcare services, these measures mark a significant step forward in ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare for every citizen in India.
