Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami on Tuesday appeared before poll officials in Kolkata for his scheduled hearing under the ongoing Special Inquiry Report (SIR) exercise in West Bengal, officials said.

Shami attended the hearing at a school in Bikramgarh, South Kolkata , bringing all necessary documents. A senior official in the office of the State Chief Electoral Officer said the cricketer’s voter enumeration form had discrepancies in certain places , prompting the notice.

The cricketer, originally from Uttar Pradesh , has been residing in Kolkata for several years due to his cricketing career. He is registered as a voter of Ward 93 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation , which falls under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency .

Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif had earlier been issued notices to appear for the hearing. A poll official said Shami had missed a previous date as he was in Rajkot representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy , leading to the rescheduling of his hearing.

Shami moved to Kolkata at a young age on the advice of his coach and later trained under former Bengal Ranji captain Sambaran Bandyopadhyay , eventually earning a spot in the Bengal Under-22 team .

The hearing forms part of the Election Commission’s ongoing efforts to ensure accurate voter registration records in the state.
