Indian-Origin Uber Eats Driver Jailed 11 Years Over Fatal Birmingham Hit-and-Run

An Indian-origin Uber Eats delivery driver has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured his wife in Birmingham, England.

Harinderpal Athwal, 41, was sentenced to 11 years and three months at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to multiple dangerous driving offences linked to the December 2025 incident on Soho Road in the West Midlands region.

According to West Midlands Police , the 54-year-old victim and his 47-year-old wife were walking hand in hand along the pavement when Athwal’s car suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic and mounted the pavement “for reasons still unknown.” The vehicle struck the couple before crashing into a parked car.

Investigators said CCTV footage showed Athwal reversing his vehicle over the injured man before driving away from the scene without offering assistance or reporting the collision. The husband died at the scene, while his wife suffered life-changing injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Detective Sergeant Julie Lyman from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit described the incident as “tragic” and condemned Athwal’s behaviour as “cruel and heartless.”

“Athwal’s actions in driving away and refusing to help showed complete disregard for what he had done in killing and seriously injuring innocent people,” she said.

A police investigation led to Athwal’s arrest within 24 hours of the crash. He later claimed he was unaware someone had died.

Athwal pleaded guilty to charges including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without a licence or insurance, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to report the collision.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court disqualified him from driving for 20 years and ordered him to pass an extended driving test before obtaining a licence again.

In an emotional victim statement released through police, the injured woman said the crash had “shattered” her family and left her feeling “completely lost” without her husband, whom she described as her “strength” and “emotional support.”
