

Indian-Origin NASA Astronaut Anil Menon Reaches ISS for First-Ever Space Mission
Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon has successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) , marking the beginning of his first-ever space mission and an eight-month scientific expedition that could play a key role in shaping future human exploration of the Moon and Mars.
Menon travelled aboard Russia's Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft along with Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. The spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and completed a rapid journey of just over three hours before docking with the ISS's Prichal module . Following routine safety checks, the trio entered the orbital laboratory, where they were warmly welcomed by astronauts already on board, taking the total crew strength to 10 members . A brief interruption in the live broadcast occurred due to a temporary satellite signal loss, but communication was restored within minutes.
The mission marks a major milestone for Menon, who was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2021 after an accomplished career spanning medicine, the military and commercial spaceflight. An emergency medicine physician and US Space Force colonel , he previously served with the US Air Force in Afghanistan and also worked with the Himalayan Rescue Association , providing medical care to climbers on Mount Everest. He joined NASA as a flight surgeon in 2014 before moving to SpaceX in 2018, where he established the company's medical programme and contributed to the development of the Starship spacecraft .
Born in Minneapolis to an Indian father from Ottapalam in Kerala and a Ukrainian mother, Menon also spent a year in India supporting polio vaccination initiatives as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, reflecting his long-standing connection with the country.
During his stay aboard the ISS, Menon will conduct cutting-edge scientific experiments aimed at improving astronaut health during long-duration space missions . His research includes studying how microgravity affects blood circulation, vein structure and blood composition, testing technology capable of producing intravenous fluids from the station's potable water system, and refining methods to manufacture high-quality semiconductor crystals in space. These advancements could support the development of high-performance computers, artificial intelligence systems and advanced medical devices on Earth.
He will also perform AI-assisted ultrasound examinations using augmented reality , a breakthrough that could enable astronauts to diagnose and manage medical emergencies without direct support from Earth during future deep-space missions.
Adding a special touch to the mission, the Soyuz rocket also carried drawings created by Indian schoolchildren , celebrating 65 years since Yuri Gagarin's historic spaceflight and the enduring cooperation between India and Russia in space exploration.
Menon and his crewmates are expected to remain aboard the ISS until April 2027 , carrying out research that could benefit both future space exploration and life on Earth .
