Indian-origin tennis player Nishesh Basavareddy pulled off the first major upset of the ongoing French Open after defeating seventh-seeded American star Taylor Fritz in the opening round at Roland Garros.

The 21-year-old wild card entrant produced a fearless display to beat world No. 9 Fritz 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 in a high-quality contest lasting two hours and 45 minutes on Sunday. The victory marked the biggest win of Basavareddy’s young career and earned him a place in the second round.

Basavareddy, whose parents migrated to the United States from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh in 1999, showed remarkable composure despite entering the match with only five tour-level appearances this season . Facing one of the strongest players on the ATP Tour, the youngster relied on aggressive shot-making, clever drop shots and accurate backhands down the line to keep Fritz under constant pressure.

The match turned into a fierce battle from the baseline, with Fritz hammering 71 winners during the encounter. However, Basavareddy responded brilliantly with 51 winners of his own , displaying maturity and confidence far beyond his experience level.

The historic triumph also ended a long wait for American men at Roland Garros. Basavareddy became the first American man since 2000 to defeat a Top-10 player at the French Open , following Jan-Michael Gambill’s victory over then world No. 8 Nicolas Kiefer more than two decades ago.

With momentum firmly on his side, Basavareddy will next face fellow American Alex Michelsen in the second round as he looks to continue his dream run in Paris.
