Indian Open Of Surfing Set For May 29–31 At Mangaluru

The seventh edition of the Indian Open of Surfing will be held from May 29 to 31 at Blue Bay Tannirbhavi Eco Beach in Mangaluru, serving as a key preparatory event ahead of India’s surfing debut at the Asian Games 2026 Aichi-Nagoya. Organised under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India, the championship was officially announced on Tuesday and is increasingly being viewed as an important fixture in the national surfing calendar, especially for athletes targeting international qualification and selection opportunities.

The championship is presented by the New Mangalore Port Authority and will be organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation and Mantra Surf Club in association with the Karnataka Surfing Association. Officials said sustained backing from the Karnataka government and coastal sports bodies has contributed significantly to the steady growth of the event, which is now in its seventh consecutive year since inception, while also expanding competitive opportunities for surfers in the region.

Surfing Federation of India vice-president Rammohan Paranjape said the timing of the tournament makes it especially significant as athletes intensify their preparations for the Asian Games challenge. He noted that every national-level competition now plays a crucial role in evaluating performance, building international exposure, and strengthening claims for selection into the Indian contingent for upcoming global events.

The Indian Open of Surfing 2026 will also serve as the second stop of the National Championship Series, following the inaugural Little Andaman Pro 2026 held in April. The series is expected to play a decisive role in shaping national rankings and selection pathways, while further strengthening India’s competitive surfing ecosystem and providing greater exposure for emerging athletes along the coast, ahead of the continental showpiece later in the year.
