Indian Navy to commission ‘Ikshak’ for advanced maritime surveys

The Indian Navy is set to commission Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class, at Naval Base, Kochi on November 6, in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff, Adm Dinesh K Tripathi. This will be the first SVL to be stationed at the Southern Naval Command.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, Ikshak embodies over 80% indigenous content, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and collaboration with local MSMEs.

The vessel’s name, “Ikshak”, meaning “Guide” in Sanskrit, perfectly captures its mission. Just as a guide leads travelers safely through unknown paths, Ikshak will chart India’s maritime domains, providing precise navigation data that ensures safe passage for ships, strengthens maritime security, and safeguards the nation’s waters.

Specifically designed to undertake full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, Ikshak will map ports, harbours, and navigational channels. The data generated will be critical for safe navigation at sea, supporting commercial shipping, naval operations, and the broader maritime safety framework of the country.

Real-life impact: For example, a cargo vessel entering Chennai Port during the monsoon can face shifting sandbanks and strong currents. With charts and maps prepared by Ikshak, port authorities and ship captains can navigate safely, avoiding groundings or collisions. Similarly, naval ships operating near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can rely on Ikshak’s surveys to maneuver through previously uncharted waters with confidence. Essentially, Ikshak acts as a GPS for the sea, ensuring safety and efficiency for both commercial and military vessels.

While India already operates hydrographic vessels like INS Sandhayak and INS Investigator, Ikshak represents a next-generation capability with advanced survey technology, multi-domain operational reach, and high indigenous content, marking a significant step forward in maritime safety and charting excellence.

Globally, Ikshak positions India alongside nations with advanced hydrographic fleets, such as the US, UK, France, and Japan. While primarily focused on Indian waters, the vessel’s modern technology, versatility, and indigenous design make it comparable to contemporary survey vessels worldwide, strengthening India’s maritime safety, strategic preparedness, and data sovereignty.

Equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic tools, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs), the ship ensures precise and comprehensive mapping. A helicopter deck further extends its operational reach for multi-domain missions.
