Indian illustrator Anand RK and investigative journalist Suparna Sharma have won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for “trAPPed” , a powerful visual narrative on digital arrest , cyber fraud and technology-enabled coercion in India.

The award was announced in the Illustrated Reporting and Commentary category, one of the Pulitzer Prizes’ journalism honours. The two Indian contributors share the prize with Natalie Obiko Pearson of Bloomberg , where the work was published as a multimedia visual investigation. The Pulitzer citation lists Anand RK and Suparna Sharma as contributors , while Pearson is identified as being of Bloomberg , indicating that the Indian duo contributed to the Bloomberg-published project rather than being Bloomberg staff journalists.

Anand RK , a Mumbai-based illustrator and visual artist , created the illustrations for the project, while Suparna Sharma , a Delhi-based freelance investigative journalist and editor , reported the story along with Natalie Obiko Pearson , an investigative reporter with Bloomberg . Bloomberg said the saga of a neurologist kept under “digital arrest” for eight days was illustrated by Anand RK and reported by Sharma and Pearson.

According to the Pulitzer citation, “trAPPed” is a riveting account of a neurologist in India who was held under “digital arrest” through her phone. The work uses visuals and words to highlight the growing global dangers of surveillance , digital scams and psychological manipulation by cybercriminals.

The recognition brings international attention to a new and fast-spreading form of cybercrime in which fraudsters impersonate law enforcement or government agencies, isolate victims through phone or video calls, and coerce them into transferring money or obeying instructions under threat of arrest.

The Pulitzer win also places Anand RK and Suparna Sharma in a select list of Indian and India-based journalists who have received the honour. Earlier Indian winners include Gobind Behari Lal , who shared the 1937 Pulitzer Prize in Reporting for coverage of science at Harvard University’s tercentenary.

In recent years, Indian photojournalists have figured prominently among Pulitzer winners. Danish Siddiqui and Adnan Abidi were part of the Reuters team that won the 2018 Feature Photography prize for images documenting the Rohingya crisis. In 2020 , Channi Anand , Mukhtar Khan and Dar Yasin of the Associated Press won Feature Photography for images from Kashmir after the revocation of Article 370. In 2022 , Adnan Abidi , Sanna Irshad Mattoo , Amit Dave and the late Danish Siddiqui won the Feature Photography Pulitzer for images of India’s COVID-19 devastation.

Among other major 2026 Pulitzer winners, The Washington Post won Public Service , The New York Times won Investigative Reporting , Reuters won National Reporting and Beat Reporting , and the Associated Press won International Reporting . In the arts and letters categories, Daniel Kraus won Fiction for Angel Down , Bess Wohl won Drama for Liberation , and Jill Lepore won History for We the People .

The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 under the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and are administered by Columbia University . The prizes recognise excellence across 15 journalism categories , including Public Service , Breaking News Reporting , Investigative Reporting , Explanatory Reporting , Local Reporting , National Reporting , International Reporting , Feature Writing , Criticism , Opinion Writing , Illustrated Reporting and Commentary , Breaking News Photography , Feature Photography and Audio Reporting . It is in Illustrated Reporting and Commentary that Anand RK and Suparna Sharma have now brought India its latest Pulitzer honour.
