An official of the Indian diplomatic mission in Bangladesh’s port city of Chattogram has been found dead inside the mission premises, triggering an investigation by local authorities and diplomatic channels as details continue to emerge.

The deceased has been identified as Naren Dhar , an Assistant Protocol Officer posted at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram . He was reportedly in his late 30s and hailed from Chandigarh, India . His body was discovered early Tuesday morning inside the old visa centre building located within the diplomatic compound.

According to police officials, Dhar was found lying in front of a bathroom door on the second floor of the building. Embassy staff reportedly became concerned after he did not respond to repeated calls, following which local authorities were alerted. Police reached the scene soon after receiving the information and began an inquest.

Preliminary findings suggest the death may have been caused by a sudden medical emergency, with cardiac arrest suspected as an initial possibility. However, officials have stressed that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after a post mortem examination at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital .

Following standard procedures for a foreign national, the body was sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for a post mortem examination . Police have registered the case as an unnatural death , and a detailed investigation is currently underway. Officials also noted that there were no immediate signs of external injury in the initial inquest report, though final conclusions are pending medical confirmation. Authorities have stated that the exact cause of death will only be established after the post mortem findings are completed.

The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Indian diplomatic mission in Bangladesh , operating through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and its Assistant High Commission in Chattogram. Diplomatic sources confirmed that official channels have been activated and coordination is ongoing with Bangladeshi authorities. On the Indian side, the Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued a formal statement, while internal sources indicate that the mission is in contact with the family of the deceased and extending all necessary assistance. Bangladeshi police have confirmed that standard diplomatic protocols are being followed and that the body will be handed over to Indian authorities after completion of post mortem formalities, with both sides awaiting the medical report to determine the exact cause of death.
