Indian Army secures exclusive IPR for new digital combat coat
In a major stride towards modernisation and self-reliance, the Indian Army has officially secured the intellectual property rights (IPR) for its newly developed coat combat (digital print) a specialised three-layered garment designed to combine combat readiness with enhanced comfort and protection. The design has been registered with the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks in Kolkata under Design Application No. 449667-001, dated February 27, 2025, and was published in the Official Journal of the Patent Office on October 7, 2025.
“Digi print” means a computer-designed camouflage pattern made of tiny pixels to help soldiers blend better into their surroundings.
Developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi, the new coat combat is the result of a consultancy project carried out under the Army Design Bureau. It complements the digital print combat uniform that was unveiled earlier and was officially introduced in January 2025, marking another significant milestone in the Army’s journey towards indigenisation and improved soldier welfare.
Purpose-Built for Modern Battlefields
The coat combat is a three-layered garment engineered to meet the demands of varying terrains and climatic conditions. It uses advanced technical textiles and features ergonomic design elements that enhance mobility, operational efficiency and comfort during prolonged deployment.
The three layers include:
• Outer Layer: Digitally printed camouflage coat offering durability and concealment in multiple terrains.
• Inner Jacket: An insulated mid-layer made from lightweight and breathable material to provide warmth without restricting movement.
• Thermal Layer: A base layer designed for effective thermal regulation and moisture control in extreme weather.
Together, these components represent a comprehensive combat ensemble that combines functionality, protection and physical ease reflecting a modern approach to soldier-centric design.
Legal Protection and Exclusive Rights
The IPR registration means that the design and camouflage pattern now exclusively belong to the Indian Army. Any manufacturing, reproduction or commercial use by non-authorised entities will be considered infringement. Legal action may include injunctions and claims for damages as per the Designs Act, 2000, Design Rules, 2001, and the Patents Act, 1970.
Symbol of Atmanirbhar Defence
Officials highlighted that this move reinforces the Army’s commitment to innovation, protection of indigenous designs, and self-reliance in defence clothing systems. It also aligns with the national vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and the Army’s long-term ‘Decade of Transformation (2023–2032)’ strategy aimed at enhancing modern warfare capabilities while prioritising soldier welfare.
In 2022, the Indian Army unveiled a modern digital camouflage combat uniform featuring pixelated patterns designed for better concealment, durability and mobility across varied terrains.
A step ahead
With this development, the Indian Army has not only secured ownership of a critical combat resource but has also sent a strong message about the importance of intellectual property in defence technology. The new coat combat represents a fusion of tactical strength and scientific design, establishing a new benchmark in military clothing systems in India.
