Indian Army Opens Sports Quota Recruitment for Havildar and Naib Subedar Posts

The Indian Army has issued a detailed notification announcing the commencement of the Sports Quota Recruitment for Direct Entry Havildar and Naib Subedar posts under Intake Series 05/2025. Applications have been invited from outstanding unmarried Indian male and female sportspersons who have participated in recognised international, national and Khelo India sporting events on or after 1 October 2023. The recruitment process has been opened exclusively through offline mode, and the completed applications are required to reach the Directorate of Physical Training and Sports, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), Sena Bhawan, New Delhi, by 5 pm on 15 December 2025.

According to the notification, candidates who have completed matriculation from a recognised board are considered eligible, provided their educational certificates are produced in original at the time of trials. Candidates from open schools have been instructed to carry school leaving certificates duly countersigned by the District Educational Officer or Education Officer. Only unmarried candidates are allowed to apply and an unmarried certificate issued within the last six months must be submitted at the time of selection trials.

The recruitment has been opened across 23 sporting disciplines, including athletics, archery, basketball, boxing, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kabaddi, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, volleyball, wrestling and other categories recognised by the Army Sports Control Board. For the Havildar post, candidates are required to have competed and won medals at the junior or senior national level or have represented India at the international level. For the Naib Subedar post, candidates who have won medals in the Olympics, Asian Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games or those who have represented India multiple times in major global competitions are given priority.

Eligibility norms regarding age specify that candidates must be between 17½ and 25 years of age and must be born between 31 March 2001 and 1 April 2008. Physical and medical standards have been prescribed as per Army norms, with region-wise height requirements for male candidates and a minimum height requirement of 162 cm for female candidates, with permissible relaxations for North-Eastern states, Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Ladakhis and members of recognised tribal communities. A physical fitness test comprising a 1.6-kilometre run, ditch jumping, zig-zag balancing and jumping events will be conducted during the selection trials, and candidates are required to qualify these tasks to proceed further.

It has been stated that shortlisting will be carried out based on higher sports achievements, and shortlisted candidates will receive call-up letters through email. The trials will include a physical fitness test, a physical standards verification stage, sports-specific skill assessments and a medical examination conducted by an Army Medical Team at the trial location. Candidates declared medically unfit will be allowed specialist review at a Military Hospital within the prescribed time. However, it has been clarified that passing the medical tests will not automatically guarantee recruitment, as selection depends entirely on merit and availability of vacancies in each sports discipline.

No application fee has been prescribed for this recruitment, and no travel allowance or dearness allowance will be provided for attending the trials. Candidates have been advised to participate entirely at their own risk, and the signing of an indemnity bond has been made compulsory. The Army has warned applicants against approaching middlemen or touts, emphasising that the selection process will remain completely transparent and merit-based. Strict action has been warned against candidates using fake documents or suppressing information regarding previous employment or discharge from service.

The pay and allowances for selected candidates will be governed by the Army Pay Rules, 2017, with all entitlements applicable to regular serving personnel. Pensionary benefits will be extended as per the Pension Regulations for the Army, 2008. Additional benefits such as medical facilities, accommodation or house rent allowance, leave entitlements, CSD canteen access and post-retirement ECHS healthcare facilities will also be applicable. Promotion opportunities up to the rank of Subedar Major have been provided, with the possibility of commissioning for those who meet prescribed standards and pass required examinations.

Candidates have been instructed to send only one application in the standard format printed on A4 size paper. Each application must include self-attested copies of educational certificates, Aadhaar card, sports certificates issued after 1 October 2023, domicile certificate, caste certificate, character certificate, unmarried certificate and 20 recent passport-size photographs. Candidates who are found with overwritten, altered or tampered documents will be rejected without exception. No change in venue or date of trials will be permitted once the call-up letter is issued and late reporting will not be allowed.

The Army has also reiterated its strict policy against drug use, doping and possession of any banned substances under the NDPS Act. Candidates have been advised to undergo a preliminary medical check-up before attending the trials and ensure they meet the required standards regarding eyesight, hearing, physical measurements and dental health. Tattoos have been allowed only on specified parts of the body, subject to Army guidelines.

The final results will be declared after completion of all stages and the joining instructions will be issued to selected candidates. The recruitment notification has stated clearly that all communications will be made only through email and candidates have been advised to check their inbox regularly until the process is completed.
