In a major boost to global space cooperation, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has signed an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to collaborate on Earth observation missions . The deal, formally titled “ESA–ISRO Arrangement concerning Joint Calibration and Validation Activities and Scientific Studies for Earth Observation Missions”, was signed virtually on March 4 by ISRO Scientific Secretary M Ganesh Pillai and ESA Director for Earth Observation, Simonetta Cheli .

This partnership builds on a long-standing collaboration that began in 1978 and was renewed in 2002 , reflecting decades of shared expertise in space research and technology. Cheli emphasized that the collaboration will be particularly valuable for ESA’s upcoming FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer) mission, aimed at enhancing the understanding of vegetation biology and environmental monitoring.

Pillai highlighted the broad scope of cooperation between ISRO and ESA, which spans Earth observation, navigation, ground station support, and human spaceflight initiatives. He also noted ESA’s crucial support for India’s flagship missions, including Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1 , and collaboration via ISRO’s deep space antenna facilities .

The agreement will facilitate joint calibration campaigns and scientific studies , ensuring that upcoming Earth observation missions deliver more precise and actionable data . Both ageWith this collaboration, India and Europencies expressed optimism that the strengthened partnership will contribute significantly to global climate monitoring, environmental research, and advanced space science.

e reaffirm their commitment to pioneering space research, leveraging shared knowledge to tackle global challenges and push the frontiers of Earth science.
