India Women’s Hockey Head Coach Marijne Wants More Despite 6-1 Rout Of South Africa
India's emphatic 6-1 victory over South Africa may have taken them to the top of Pool D, but head coach Sjoerd Marijne was not ready to celebrate without pointing out the areas his team must improve before a crucial clash against England.
After beginning their FIH Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against world number four China, India produced a commanding attacking performance to register their first win. But despite scoring six goals, Marijne felt his players had left several opportunities unused.
The Dutch coach said India lacked precision at key moments, particularly in passing and finishing.
"I am very happy with the goals, but I am also a very critical person. I always want more from my team," Marijne said, adding that India could have scored even more.
Passing, he stressed, remains an area requiring immediate improvement. While individual skill is often celebrated in Indian hockey, Marijne believes success at the international level depends heavily on accurate and efficient ball movement.
India were occasionally untidy in their passing, with issues in direction and receiving that could prove costly against stronger opponents.
The next challenge is England, and the final Pool D encounter could decide the group standings. Although India currently have three points and a superior goal difference, Marijne warned his players against reading too much into the table.
England, he noted, are a higher-ranked side and have beaten India earlier this year.
Forward Lalremsiami, meanwhile, praised India's collective effort and said the team would focus on reviewing its own performance. The Arjuna Award nominee added that the recognition had given her extra motivation to perform for the country.
India have gained momentum with their six-goal show, but Marijne's message is clear: sharper passing and better finishing will be essential when England come calling.
